Did you know that make up brushes are a breeding ground for bacteria? That’s why today is designated as National Clean Your Makeup Brushes Day. It’s a friendly reminder to give your beloved tools a deep clean and keep your skin happy and healthy.
But don’t forget – you shouldn’t just clean your brushes one weekend a year! It should be done regularly, weekly, if possible.

Why is it important to clean make up brushes?

Dirty brushes harbor bacteria, oil, and dead skin cells, as well as all the excess left over make up. These can all transfer to your skin, leading to breakouts, clogged pores, and infections.

Product buildup on your brushes can affect how your make up applies. You might experience patchy foundation, uneven blush, and streaky eyeshadow, as well as an incorrect colour pay off or colour match.

Dirty brushes can absorb the product, making it less effective and forcing you to use more. And with the cost of cosmetics constantly rising, think about cleaning your brushes more and using less!

How do I clean my brushes?

You’ll need a gentle cleanser (baby shampoo, specific brush cleaner, or a mild soap), warm water, and a clean towel.

Gently wet the bristles under warm running water, trying not to get too much water into the base of the brush.

Apply a small amount of cleanser/soap to the bristles.

Gently massage the bristles in your palm or a brush-cleaning mat to work up a lather. A swirling motion is best as it is gentler on the bristles and will maintain the glue bond better.

Rinse the bristles under warm water until all the soap is removed.

Gently reshape the bristles and lay them flat to dry on a clean towel. Avoid drying them upright, as this can cause water to seep into the ferrule (the metal part that holds the bristles). If you wash brushes in evening and leave to dry overnight, they should be ready for you to use the following day.

Brush Maintenance

Aim to clean your brushes at least once a week. If you have plenty of brushes, you could always create a wash box and place used brushes in once they’ve been used and do a big brush wash every weekend!

Use an oil free make up wipe to clean any excess product from your brushes between washes quickly.

Although they are pricier, high-quality brushes are often easier to clean and last longer.

By taking a few minutes to clean your make up brushes regularly, you’re improving the appearance of your make up and protecting your skin health.
